MARSS00011 Marine Radio Operator's VHF Skill Set

This two-day skill set provides participants with the essential skills and knowledge to operate VHF marine radios safely correctly.

This course is a mandatory requirement of the Coxswain Grade 1 and Coxswain Grade 2 qualifications (where a vessel has a VHF radio fitted). This certificate is also suitable for those recreational vessel operators who have a VHF radio onboard.

Overview

Campus Karratha | Kununurra | Pundulmurra (South Hedland)

When Semester 1, 2026 | Semester 2, 2026

Study Mode On Campus

Upon successful completion, students will receive a Short-Range Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) License issued by ACMA.

Students will learn about:

  • VHF radios
  • Different stations and frequencies required for communication
  • Operating procedures for routine, distress, urgency and safety communications
  • Marine DSC techniques and procedures, public correspondences, Seaphone and
  • EPIRBs
  • Search and Rescue in Australia
  • Marine radio equipment basic trouble shooting and maintenance

Units:

MARC044 Transmit and receive information by marine VHF radio

  • Transmit and receive information by marine radio, including using marine very high frequency (VHF) and high frequency (HF) radio according to regulations
  • Carry out user maintenance and fault-finding procedures on radio equipment and power supplies
  • Operate emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), search and rescue radar transponders (SARTs), automatic identification system search and rescue transmitters (AIS-SARTs), AIS man overboard (AIS-MOB) devices and digital selective calling MOB (DSC-MOB) devices.
