The Diploma of Nursing provides you with the skills to assist in the provision of preventative, curative and rehabilitative nursing. Upon successful completion, you are eligible to be registered as an enrolled nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. 

Students residing in the North West are eligible to receive a stipend from the state government to assist with the cost of clinical placement (conditions apply).

Enrolled Nurses have varied and deeply fulfilling career options. Enrolled Nurses have the ability to influence and impact the lives of people and communities.


North Regional TAFE’s Diploma of Nursing will provide students with the knowledge and skills to be employed as an Enrolled Nurse in the many work settings here in the Kimberley and Pilbara.

Our content is current and evidence-based, and our simulation facilities are state-of-the-art making sure that students are industry-ready when they graduate.

Employment prospects are high in the field of nursing and areas of work could be in hospitals, community health services, private homes (home care), residential care (care homes), outpatient clinics, medical practices and pathology providers.

This course is designed to be completed over 18 months (three semesters) through a blended learning approach, combining both on-campus and online learning, on-site simulations, clinical work placements, and self-directed study.


2025 Tutorial Dates 

Pundulmurra - Combined (Online and on Campus)

Four days of online or on campus sessions each week from 8.30 am to 5.30pm.

Up to two and half (2.5) simulation weeks on-site at Pundulmurra campus each semester.


Weekly time commitment

Students are expected to dedicate time outside of scheduled class hours to complete assignments, review course materials, and engage in self-directed study (10-12 hours expected per week).

Our Pundulmurra campus in South Hedland is home to the state-of-the-art Health and Community Services Training Centre. This facility encompasses a simulation wing incorporating an eight-bed hospital ward, nurse’s station, patient examination and treatment rooms, pan room, fit testing room, training classrooms and a viewing area for lecturer observation.

To successfully complete your course, you will need to study outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research.
 
Please note as a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study when enrolling in the Diploma of Nursing:
 
You will have textbooks to purchase, and details of these will be provided at orientation.
You may be required to complete a health check (approx. $200)*
You may require immunisations and/or provide evidence of vaccinations for work placements and/or employment - COVID-19, Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella and Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTP) record of vaccination (cost will vary depending on your doctor and what vaccinations are needed)*
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) Screening Test (if required) ($37)*
Working With Children Check (WWCC) ($11)*
National Police Certificate - through WA Police website only ($57.60)
NDIS Worker Screening Check ($11)
WA Health Department Criminal History Record Check (no cost if applied for post Police Certificate)*
Uniform: A Scrub Top and Pants ($79.10 per set) and closed-in slip-resistant shoes ($79.90). Details of these will be provided at orientation.

Additional Requirements

You will also be required to:

  • Travel to NR TAFE Pundulmurra Campus for:
    • Simulation training
    • Nursing calculation exams

 

Legal Requirements

To protect the public from harm, registered health practitioners and education providers must report concerns about registered students. This is a legal requirement. Practitioners and education providers only need to notify the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) when they have a reasonable belief that a student has an impairment that may place the public at substantial risk of harm during clinical training.

Reporting Standards

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) Enrolled Nurse Accreditation Standards 2017 require Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) delivering the HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing to notify AHPRA of any student identified as having an impairment that may place the public at substantial risk of harm. AHPRA will be informed of the names of all students undertaking the Diploma of Nursing.

After Completion

Upon completing the course and a minimum of 400 hours of work placement, graduates will need to:

  • Seek Registration with AHPRA to work as an enrolled nurse, or
  • Enroll in Further Study to become a registered nurse.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has developed core registration standards that define the requirements for applicants, registrants, or students. These standards include:

  • Registration Standard: Professional Indemnity Insurance Arrangements

LLN Robot Assessment Details

  • LLN Robot is an online tool assessing your English and Math levels.
  • The test is conducted free of charge by TAFE and also helps assess eligibility for VET Student Loans.
  • Applicants following the English Language Test Pathway only need to complete the Numeracy section.

 

You must demonstrate your English language competency in one of the following ways:

  1. Primary language pathway
  2. you have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country, including at least two years between years 7 and 12, and

Evidence required: Submit the completed (Primary Language Form (Appendix A)) to admissions@tafe.wa.edu.au with your application number

  1. English Language Test Pathway

        You achieve the required minimum scores in one of the following English language tests and meet the requirements for test results specified in this standard:

  1. Cambridge (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency)
  2. International English Language Testing System (Academic) (IELTS)
  3. Occupational English Test (OET)
  4. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)
  5. Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)

Evidence required: Submit an official copy of your test results to admissions@tafe.wa.edu.au

NOTE: We will only accept test results from:

  1. one test sitting, or 

ii.    a maximum of two test sittings in a 12-month period 

and only if the requirements for test results, such as when the test must be taken, type/modality of test and the required minimum scores, specified in this standard are met as set out in this standard.
