Students must meet the following entry requirements:

• The National Maritime Register (AMSA) require students undertaking this qualification to be over 16 years of age. 
• It is an organisational requirement that students can successfully swim for 50m unaided to undertake the unit MARF027 Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment.

• At least 180 days QSS on commercial vessels with propulsion power ≥150 kW on vessels with inboard diesel engines and a completed AMSA task book; OR
• At least 270 days QSS on commercial vessels with propulsion power >150 kW on vessels with inboard diesel engines without an AMSA task book 
   OR
• At least 90 days QSS on commercial vessels with inboard diesel engines with propulsion power >150 kW and a completed AMSA task book while holding a workshop skill equivalent qualification.

• Record of sea service form 771
• On board sea service record from your task book
• Letter from the vessel operator, owner, master or chief engineer detailing your QSS.
• Approved sea service log book

Weekly Time Commitment
Students are expected to commit 7 hours per day as per the scheduled block dates. 5-7 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours is required for assignment preparation and research.
Negotiations with the lecturer may be necessary for the Shipboard Safety Skill Set and Marine Radio Dates dates.

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): closed-in shoes, long sleeve shirt, long pants
• Swimwear for in-pool practicals
• Students must bring paper and stationery
• Adequate clothing is required for the various activities undertaken in this program

Further Information

This program is delivered in a face to face mode where students are required to attend for all days of the program where the delivery is undertaken over full days. North Regional TAFE delivers this program of training over a period of 15 days at the Broome Campus, consisting of classroom face-to-face delivery of 17 Core Units.

First Aid
•    Learners may present with a Statement of Attainment from other providers for credit or
•    Learners may enrol in AE875 First Aid Skill Set delivered by an NR TAFE First Aid lecturer and this unit is credited to the MAR qualification.

Licensing
This Qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certification as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal NC as defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.

AMSA certification will require:
•    Achieving MAR30821 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Costal)

• Complete an AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA) (Completed during the course)
• Complete AMSA medical 
• Current HLTAID011 First Aid
