The Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) prepares students for exciting roles managing vessels up to 750kW. Get certified by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and learn essential skills in engine maintenance and electrical systems.

This course trains students to work as a chief engineer or second engineer on various vessels within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Students will gain hands-on experience in engine and system management, qualifying them for roles on vessels with different power levels. With practical training and certification, you’ll be ready to start a successful career in the maritime industry.
This qualification applies to people working in maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of:
- Chief engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 750 kilowatts within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
- Chief or second engineer on a vessel with outboard engines with unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ.
- Second engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 1500 kilowatts within the EEZ.
- An assistant under the general supervision of the chief engineer.
- In the engine room of a vessel with propulsion power up to 3000 kilowatts within the EEZ.
Throughout the course, you will gain skills in:
- Applying safety procedures including survival skills at sea
- Extinguishing fires
- Refueling vessels adhering to marine pollution (MARPOL) guidelines
- Performing basic engineering calculations
- Operating and maintaining deck machinery
- Auxiliary power systems, and extra-low and low voltage electrical systems and equipment
This course is suited to you if:
- You are already employed or are required to hold this certificate to facilitate employment
- You are wishing to become employed in the maritime industry as a MED 2 or attain your Engineering ticket to enhance promotion in the sector.
- You are an industry provider wishing to upskill staff in maritime operations
Students will complete face-to-face study over 15 days.
