The Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal) provides the essential skills to command vessels up to 12 meters in length, including both inboard and outboard engines. 

This Qualification allows students to operate vessels in sheltered waters or within 5 nautical miles from shore or an aquaculture lease. It also covers the operation of tender or auxiliary vessels within 3 nautical miles of a parent vessel in the exclusive economic zone. Additionally, students will be trained to undertake the duties and responsibilities of a Coxswain Grade 3 NC(opens in a new tab)

Gain practical skills and real-world experience with our Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade II Near Coastal), setting you on the path to a successful maritime career.

This Qualification equips students with the skills needed to command vessels up to 12 meters, covering both inboard and outboard engines. Through practical, hands-on training, students will learn vessel handling, seamanship, and practical engineering. The program also prepares students for the Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency, providing real-world experience and survival training.

  • Command and operate the engines of a vessel less than 12 metres long with unlimited outboard engine propulsion, or inboard engines less than 100 kilowatts
  • In sheltered waters or within 5 nautical miles from the shore or an aquaculture lease
  • As a tender or auxiliary vessel operating within 3 nautical miles of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone
  • Undertake the duties and perform the functions of a Coxswain Grade 3 NC

This course is suited to you if:

  • You are looking to progress from deck work to skippering a commercial vessel
  • You can swim 50 metres
  • You are aged at least 16 years old
  • You are medically fit including eyesight, good spoken and written English                    
  • You have minimal sea time and experience and wish to acquire the certification to command a commercial vessel up to <12m, with limiting range, horsepower, and restrictive conditions.
  • You have spent a small amount of time on board recreational vessels which may include but not be limited to tourism, aquaculture, port operations, or ranger groups. 
  • You are already employed or are required to hold this certificate to facilitate employment
